Pilonidal Sinus
Pilo means hairs, nidus means nest.
Pilonidal means a “nest of hairs”
It is cyst or abscess that occurs in the cleft at the top of buttocks near the tail bone. It may have a hollow tunnel (sinus tract) that connects it to the surface of the skin.

Sign & Symptoms :
It does not cause any symptoms unless it becomes infected.
Pain, redness, a swelling of the cyst and area around it.
One or more pits are formed in the skin of gluteal fold.
Pits may be plugged with hairs. Abscess forms when pits are blocked.
Foul smelling discharge from cyst or abscess.
Diagnosis :
- Gentle separation of buttocks by your doctor to expose the diseased area may facilitate examination and making a diagnosis if pilonidal sinus.
- Fistulogram /sinogram may help in diagnosis.
Treatment :
Surgery is the only treatment.
General Anesthesia
- when the abscess is there pus should be drained under general anesthesia.
